The Challenge
Mat created a zoetrope with a central octopus surrounded by a swarm of jellyfish for the Arrhythmia exhibition (2023). He required a series of models that replicated the fine features in materials displaying specific criteria. How each material reacted to light would be critical in material and process choice.

The Process
The octopus, which formed the centre-piece, needed to be in a translucent resin while the series of jellyfish that formed the perimeter features had to be clear. The jellyfish models would be fitted with internal LEDs to present a luminescent effect so a material that could be resistant to light was necessary.
The obvious resin choices were Somos’s Evolve for the octopus and Watershed for the jellyfish. Building across three machines at 100 microns allowed us to provide models that reproduced the fine features and were accurate to exacting standards for assembly.
The Result
A stunningly lit bloom of clear jellyfish that dance and rise around a translucent, central octopus. Strong enough to withstand the rotational forces while highlighting the beauty of the design.
