The Challenge
To produce a series of 126 intricate and delicate 3D printed arthropods and structures that would form part of a three-dimensional zoetrope. Each of the models required painting prior to installation so any material choice had to be accurate with a good surface finish and easy finishing properties.

The Process
Stereolithography (SLA) was the obvious process choice and Watershed the preferred material as it met the critical criteria. A combination of clarity, finish and strength would ensure that each model looked its best and would withstand the centrifugal forces exerted on it when in motion.
Each species contained eighteen iterations that differed slightly and required individual build orientations and tailored support structures to achieve the highest quality reproductions while maximising surface quality.
The Result

An incredible kinetic sculpture that creates a mesmerising optical illusion. When the zoetrope was complete, and in rotation, each bug appears to dance, move, and interact with its environment.
