The Challenge
We were approached by Mat Collishaw about producing a range of parts for a delicate, technically demanding chandelier zoetrope. The main structure needed to be clear while the characters that produced the effect of movement were to be finished in a variety of colours and textures.

The Process
Any SLA material could be used for the figures but we chose Somos Watershed XC11122 SLA resin as its post-cleaning surface is excellent and it is a fabulous resin to finish. The bulk of the chandelier needed to mimic crystal so, again, Watershed SLA resin was the natural choice.
Build orientation was critical to achieve the finest surface layering while keeping supports to a minimum. Our technicians set up almost 700 individual parts, each requiring incredible attention to detail. Post-finishing was complex due to the small features and hidden supports that needed removal and dressing. To enhance UV-stability the chandelier structure was coated in a UV-stable clear lacquer.
The Result
An absolutely beautiful piece of dynamic art that formed the centre-piece of the Fountains Relief exhibition. At rest the intricate design captured the attention of visitors but the story flew into life when the zoetrope was in motion.
