The Challenge
Sanders & Co were tasked with developing a new range of innovative products for kitchenware giant Zyliss. Alongside other products we were asked to develop multi-material working prototypes throughout the design and development process through to a final, production-mimic model for final approval, photography and marketing.

The Process
The mandoline is an award-winning piece of design which brings together numerous functions into a single product and was certainly a challenge to prototype.  From early SLA and SLS models to check fit and function through to fully finished and vacuum cast parts in production materials, our craftsmen rose to the challenges set in order to produce a series of complex working models in various finishes.

Initially, a series of SLA and SLS models were produced to assemble a proof-of-concept model with the added advantage of checking the function of the working parts: sliding features, retention clips, blade fits, switches etc. After a series of design and prototyping phases the final design was turned into a finished, working prototype ready for marketing and photography. We used a combination of fully finished SLAs and SLAs with high quality vacuum castings and over-moulding to achieve a protype that was indistinguishable from the manufactured product.

The Result

A stunning working model of the final design was presented to the client on time and to budget. The Mandoline went on to win a coveted European Product Design Award and was a finalist in the IHHS Housewares Design Awards.
